Shirley the medium8/5/2023 ![]() It’s the sort of imaginative programming that makes the Brattle, well, the Brattle. To coincide with “Story,” the Brattle has scheduled several of the films Cousins cites. Watching “Story,” one realizes that so much of what most of us most love about the movies isn’t the medium, per se, but its appurtenances: stardom and glamour and the pull of narrative. This uncharacteristically poetic touch is a bit distracting. The credits refer to them as “dreamers.” They’re stand-ins for all of us who watch film, which is a sort of dream. Cousins also regularly cuts to shots of people with their eyes closed. It’s a conceptual version of establishing shots. In addition to the clips, Cousins includes views of various locations around the world - Times Square, India, Hong Kong - a reminder that moviegoing, as well as moviemaking, is global in nature. Cousins is a how guy much more than a what or why guy, and here he’s getting away from how.įrom "The Story of Film: A New Generation." Music Box Films In part, that’s because of a focus on extra-cinematic considerations, such as personal identity. The second half gets a bit scatty the further it proceeds. The second, “What Have We Been Digging For?,” considers it mostly in terms of content. The first, “Extending the Language of Film,” looks at innovation largely in terms of form. Maybe that’s as much a matter of morality as pronunciation. In the second half of the film, when he refers to the conflict between “poor and rich” the way he says the first word, purr, sounds awfully close to pure. Cousins’s highest term of praise, “innovative,” he pronounces in-nuh-vit-if. One of the pleasures of “Story” is listening to the Celtic stew that is his accent. He grew up in Northern Ireland (it’s a shame that he didn’t direct “Belfast” instead of Kenneth Branagh) and now lives in Scotland. So anyways, this is Shirley for all of those Courage the Cowardly Dog fan out there. The way Cousins says things is almost as interesting as what he actually says. Otherwise the rest is just her name and my signature. The big transparent Shirley was an option, and I decided to go with it. All I did was make a self-made gradient background with random spots and a boxed-in effect on Paint SAI, each of which with their own little effect added to it. If you are wondering about the background that I used. ![]() Her colors were practically taken from a certain screenshot of Shirley, except for the heels, which again I decided to think of myself. I probably could've used a reference to the heels, but I decided to be lazy and go off the top of my head. Most of her design was taken from a couple screenshots that I used as a reference, other than her heels which I had to use my imagination. After watching a couple of the episodes with Shirley in them, I decided to draw Shirley in my style just to see how she would look. I recently went back to watch the show again on YouTube, since they seem to have most of the episodes that I remember as a kid. Man, if she was real, I would let her live with me any day, that's how awesome she is to me. I always thought it was funny how she would always refer to Eustace as "The Stupid One," and would always fight with him. ![]() Shirley was always one of my favorite characters in the show, aside from Courage and Eustace. If you don't, well then I will tell you that this is Shirley the Medium from the show Courage the Cowardly Dog. Well, by now you should already know who this is.
